F.A.Q.
First and foremost, if you are someone who is obsessed with canon information and would only like a class that includes that, then this isn't the class for you. I've tried my best to reason out actual illnesses that would befall creatures of the Wizarding World using Rowling's descriptions, but the vast majority of the information comes from my own imagination.
This class offers the full 300 points and 1 quill. All lessons and assignments are available at the start of term (the one exception being the final exam), and each assignment is worth 30 points, for a total of 60 points available per lesson.
- When will lessons and assignments be posted?
Lessons and their corresponding assignments will be posted all term long, except for the final
exam, which will be posted about a month and a half before the final due date.
- Do you need an assistant?
No thank you! I've got a lovely assistant, Laurie Lovegood, lined up for the term.
- How many points can I earn in this class, and how do I pass this class and earn my quill?
You can earn the full 300 points in this class if you complete every assignment correctly and on time. To pass and earn a quill, however, you only need to get 120 points AND complete the final exam (the exam points WILL count towards the required 120 for a quill). You must complete a lesson's homework assignment before you can complete it's extra credit assignment.
- Is there an exam and/or final project for this class?
There are both.
The final exam is mandatory but the class project is optional.
- Do you allow extensions?
Seeing as there is one final due date for ALL of the work, I will NOT be allowing extensions. By allowing you to complete any lesson at any time I feel that I am allowing you to work around your schedule fairly well. The final due date may be noticeably earlier than most final due dates for other classes (it'll probably be about a week to a week and a half before all quills, points, etc. must be submitted.), but this is because I know my own abilities and am planning ahead - I'm fairly busy near the end of term, like many of you are, and so I need adequate time to be able to mark all of the work that may come in last-minute. That being said, if I find myself with more time than anticipated, I will extend the due date and send out a class message informing you all of it. But really, don't count on that happening.
- What awards does this class offer?
This class offers 4 awards - one for those who earn 250+ points in the class, one for those who complete 5/5 homework assignments and 3/5 or more extra credit assignments, one for those with the
most outstanding final projects, and one for those with overall outstanding work throughout the term.
Specific names of awards to be added soon.

Class Rules
1. Do not copy and paste answers from my lesson into your homework; you will not be rewarded marks for this as it is considered plagiarism, which is against both HOL rules and my own personal class rules. Please try to express your understanding of the material in your own words. In cases where it is difficult to re-word an answer, I'll be much more lenient, of course. But please try your best. Also, if English is not your first language, I will be much more pleased to "look past" this rule for you - but you have to let me know. As Prof. Felicia Hartwick says, "If you show that you know the answer, how you manage to put it into writing is of little concern."
So that being said, please include at the top of your e-mails (where you have your name, HOL ID, etc.) a reminder that you aren't very fluent in English IF this is the case for you. I would still like you to attempt to write the answers out on your own, but if you get frustrated and end up copying and pasting answers once in a while, I'll understand.
2. Do not plagiarize anyone elses' ideas - please cite any sources if you had external help or did research. It's worth noting that I archive past homework, so don't think you can pull a Ron/Harry and copy off a friend ;)
3. You must put your HOL name and house at the top of every assignment you send in. The subject line of your work must contain the appropriate title (Instructions for this will be at the top of every assignment). If I don't know who you are, I won't be able to give you the shiny points you worked so hard for!
4. HAVE FUN. This class was created almost all from my own imagination, so don't feel afraid to get a little "out there" with creative portions of assignments if you want. HOL classes are intended to be fun but sometimes challenging - if you aren't enjoying the work then why are you here? If you're having trouble with anything at all, do not hesitate to contact me! My HOL ID is iv823 - please stick to HOL PM's/messages if you wish to contact me in a timely manner. I am an IRC user as well, and I will happily answer questions or help you with assignments if you catch me on there :).
